Our protagonists follow the imperative “You can be anything you want.” They manifest zest for self-presentation and at the same time the compulsion of constantly having to reinvent the self, as propagated by the ‘modern achiever society’. These figures are no longer searching for a valid identity, but have come to terms with the ephemerality of their self-design. Stage-set pieces of absolutist power are encountered next to quasi costume imitations of mythical science-fiction heroes, a feeling for life between ecstasy and nightmare. The island appears in the context of these images less as point of escape for Romantic drop-out fantasies than as a field of social experiment.
