Call for applications: grant program for international organizations presenting Korean artists

The Ministry of Culture, Sports & Tourism and the Korea Arts Management Service (KAMS) engage in a broad range of international exchange programs designed to introduce Korea’s contemporary art to an international audience, and foster development of a global network comprised of art professionals. As a part of this effort, KAMS seeks to award grants to international art organizations that 1) invite Korean artists to exhibit, 2) collaborate with Korean partners to present exhibitions of Korean artists, or 3) collaborate with Korean artists/partners to produce and exhibit commissioned artworks, thereby assisting high-potential Korean artists with extending their reach to international art markets. International art organizations are invited to apply as follows for this grant program in its second term:

Eligible applicants: International art organizations, both commercial and non-profit entities, exhibiting Korean artists’ contemporary artworks by invitation of Korean artists and/or collaborating with Korean partners

Eligible types of exhibitions
–Exhibition for which international art organizations invite Korean artists
–Exhibition of Korean artists curated by, or collaborating with, Korean partners
–Production and exhibition of commissioned artworks in collaboration with Korean artists/partners

Period of exhibitions: executed from September 2018 to December 2019
–Pre-award costs are permissible when the exhibition is held from Septempber to October 2018
–Grant for exhibition conducted in 2019 will be subsidized in 2019
–The grant will be awarded to the Korean artist/partner

Requirements
–Exhibited artworks must be made available for sale during/after the exhibition
–The international organization and the Korean artist must have prior consultation and agreement
–The percentages of the artwork’s sales price that is afforded to each party must be explicitly stated in the agreement

Restrictions
It is ineligible to apply if:
–The president of the international organization is a Korean national
–An exhibition is operating as a bazaar or a fundraising event
–Korean artist/partner is responsible, in any form of payment, for rent of the gallery space or utility costs, such as electricity and water
–An exhibition for which the Korean artist/partner is already receiving funds from the Korean government, local governments, or public institutions (e.g. Arts Council Korea, Korea Foundation)

Grant amount
–Each exhibition can receive funds between 5–30 million KRW (approx. 4,700-28,000 USD)
–The grant amount is determined by a panel of judges as part of a screening process, with funds later awarded to the selected Korean artist/partner

Eligible expenses
–The Korean artist’s airfare, accommodation expenses, and artwork transportation costs
–Other expenses are not allowed

How to apply
–The application form must be submitted by the international organization to KAMS
–Apply via email (art.abroad@gokams.or.kr) only; the application cannot be submitted via personal contact or mail

–Agreement: copies of the official agreements that explicitly specify the percentages of the artwork’s sales price afforded to each party

Screening & announcement
–1st session: Review of received application forms
–2nd session: Korean artists/partners selected from the primary session will be subject to an interview and presentation screening

Note
–Submitted documents and materials are not returned
–If any of the information in the application documents (e.g. curriculum vitae) is found to have been falsified, the applicant will be ruled out from consideration. If any discrepancies are discovered after the grant award is confirmed, the award may be outright cancelled
–The grantee must immediately inform KAMS if any changes occur that diverse from the information on the initial application form
–If the grantee fails to carry out the project stated in the application form, the subsidy must be returned
