EXPO CHICAGO announces the full programming for EXPO VIDEO, IN/SITU, and EXPO Projects to take place at Navy Pier and throughout the city of Chicago during the fifth annual exposition, September 22–25, 2016. Joining 145 leading international galleries from 22 countries and 53 cities, the on-site programming will feature major site-specific, large-scale installations and video works by international artists represented by the 2016 exhibitors. In addition to the works presented at Navy Pier, EXPO CHICAGO expands one of its key initiatives to showcase works by leading international artists beyond the exposition floor with IN/SITU Outside, presented in partnership with the Chicago Park District (CPD) and Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE), and the inaugural program of OVERRIDE | A Billboard Project, an unprecedented citywide public art initiative, featuring a curated selection of 15 artists from major local, national and international galleries throughout Chicago’s City Digital Network.

IN/SITU and EXPO Projects
Situated throughout the exposition floor, the 2016 IN/SITU program will feature large-scale, site-specific, and performative work in and around Festival Hall. Selected by Diana Nawi, Associate Curator at the Perez Art Museum Miami, the 2016 program is entitled ”A Break in the Code”addressing subjects that range from architecture, industry, and the constructed environment, to the election funding system—from illicit and underground economies, to the site of the fair itself. This year’s IN/SITU program, A Break in the Code, is anchored by the first piece specifically designed for EXPO CHICAGO, Bettina Pousttchi’s Rotunda (2016). Located above the center plaza of the show floor as a main focal point of the exposition, the plaza piece will be joined by highlights including Spencer Finch, Victoria Fu, Rodney McMillian, Julio César Morales and For Freedoms, among others.

EXPO VIDEO
Selected by Daria de Beauvais, Curator at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, the 2016 EXPO VIDEO program will be presented in two distinct thematic sections for the first time since its inception. On view throughout the large-format screenings rooms and viewing stations designed by Studio Gang Architects on the Main Floor of Festival Hall, the two programs, entitled The Yellow Wallpaper and Daedalus, will present dual thematic concepts in film. Including more than 15 film, video, and new media works, highlights include Alex Bag, Pierre Bismuth, Brice Dellsperger, Camille Henrot, Jesper Just, Mary Reid Kelley, and Laure Prouvost, among others. The works included in the program span over two decades (1996–2016), showing the evolution of video art and the experimentation of many techniques, from scratched film to 16mm to digital technologies.

In addition to presenting EXPO VIDEO on the main floor of Festival Hall, EXPO CHICAGO has partnered with select international organizations to broaden the reach of moving image work, including an inaugural partnership with London’s Daata Editions; the world-premiere and screening of Luca Trevisani in partnership with Lo Schermo dell’Arte, the world’s largest cinema and art festival based in Florence, to take place in Chicago during EXPO ART WEEK; and a special presentation of EXPO VIDEO to align with the 15th Venice Architecture Biennale though Zuecca Project Space at Spazio Ridotto, focusing on the intersection between film and architecture.

A highlight EXPO VIDEO discussion with de Beauvais will take place on Saturday, September 24 at 11:30am as part of /Dialogues. For a full schedule, click here.

IN/SITU Outside and OVERRIDE
Building upon the City of Chicago and DCASE’s longstanding commitment to public art, EXPO CHICAGO expands one of its key initiatives to showcase works by leading international artists beyond the exposition floor at Navy Pier. Presenting temporary public art installations situated along the Lakefront and throughout Chicago neighborhoods, the 2016 IN/SITU Outside program will feature work by Afruz Amighi, two large-scale sculptures by Mark di Suvero, alongside an extended piece by Daniel Buren and Ewerdt Hilgemann.

In addition, EXPO CHICAGO, in partnership with the City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) announces OVERRIDE | A Billboard Project to align with the fifth exposition. In an unprecedented citywide public art initiative, the City will feature the work of 15 artists from major local, national and international galleries on Chicago’s City Digital Network consisting of 28 digital billboards. Displayed from August 29–September 25, this inaugural program allows artists to push the boundaries of how visual culture is disseminated in our increasingly image-based environment. Highlight artists include Sanford Biggers, Rashid Johnson as part of For Freedoms, Vik Muníz, Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle, Joyce PensatoTOILETPAPER / Maurizio Cattelan & Pierpaolo Ferrari, and Wendy White, among others.
