Jennie Smith: New Drawings

Now showing at Rena Bransten Gallery through July 8

A variety of creatures populate Jennie Smith’s delicately rendered graphite and watercolor drawings. Shells, mammals and birds, both real and imagined, appear alone, airborne or piled together in fantastically stratified ecosystems. Expressing ideas of shelter and survival Smith’s drawings suggest narratives of collective action at the same time as calling for ecological awareness and social change.

Jennie Smith’s work was included in this year’s Whitney Biennial and has received great acclaim. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition.

Smith was born in 1981 in San Francisco, California where she currently lives and works and received her BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art & Design. Smith’s previous projects include the Bulletin Board at the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco (2006) and the 2006 Whitney Biennial, New York.
