Shown here for the first time in its motorised version the work was originally conceived for the Pompidou Centre and has also been exhibited at the 3rd Bienal de Valencia.
Xavier Veilhan, (born in 1963 lives and works in Paris) is arguably one of France’s most internationally renowned artists and has been the subject of numerous institutional one-man shows including the Musée d’Art Moderne de la ville de Paris in 1993, CCC Tours in 1995, le Consortium Dijon in 1999, MAMCO Genève in 1999-2000, Magasin de Grenoble in 2000, CCA Kitakyushu in Japan in 2002, Göteborgs Konsthall, Göteborg in 2002 and the Pompidou Centre in 2004. He recently had a solo-exhibition, Le Plein emploi, at the Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain in Strasbourg and can currently be seen in La Force de l’Art at the Grand Palais, Paris.
More of Xavier Veilhan’s work, including a smaller version of the Mobile, can be seen in at our stand 2.1/K3.
Mixed media installation
4 x 6,25 x 11,25 m
Infinities is conceived as a closed environment where the viewer is confronted with a dozen of giant drill bits, each revolving at a slow speed, allowing visitors to appreciate its movement. This rotation gives the impression of a continuing downward pressure. Walls are covered with mirrors and as visitors enter this agonizing hallway, they experience an uncanny, yet poetic, confrontation to the “infinitely small” and “the infinitely big”. The work is claustrophobic yet stretches into infinity.
Kader Attia (born 1970, lives and works in Paris) has been working as an artist for almost a decade. His work oscillates between installations (The Dream Machine at the Venice Biennale 2003 and The Sweat Shop at Art Basel Miami Beach 2004), video-work (Shadow at Video Zone, Tel Aviv 2004), photography (Alter Ego at Sketch Gallery, London 2005) and drawings and wall-paintings (Sweet Sweat, publication available, Andréhn-Schiptjenko 2006).
Infinities is presented in collaboration with Galerie Daniel Templon. More of Kader Attia’s work can be seen at our stand 2.1/K3.
