EXPO CHICAGO returns September 13–17, 2017 with 135 leading international galleries from 25 countries and 58 cities for the sixth annual exposition.

Initiating the beginning of the fall art season at historic Navy Pier, the 2017 Exhibitors will be presented alongside one of the highest quality platforms for global contemporary art and culture, including /Dialogues, IN/SITU, IN/SITU Outside, EXPO VIDEO, OVERRIDE: A Billboard Project, EXPO Sound, the Art Critics Forum, and Curatorial Forum, among others. Dedicated to rigorous and challenging programming, the 2017 edition of EXPO CHICAGO will align with the Chicago Architecture Biennial (September 16, 2017–January 7, 2018), and the Palais de Tokyo: Singing Stones at The Roundhouse on the DuSable Museum of African American History campus as part of their first official of-site exhibition series with the Institut français in the United States.

2017 programming highlights:

/Dialogues
Presented in partnership with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), /Dialogues offers panel discussions, conversations and provocative artistic discourse with leading artists, curators, designers and arts professionals on the current issues that engage them. A curated component of the 2017 program, the second annual Symposium will feature a day-long series of discussions and discourse surrounding the intersecting fields of art and architecture, among other keynotes and panels.

IN/SITU and IN/SITU Outside
Curated by Florence Derieux, the IN/SITU programprovides a dynamic opportunity for exhibiting galleries to showcase large-scale and site-specific installations by leading international artists. Additionally, presented in partnership with the Chicago Park District, the City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) and Navy Pier, IN/SITU Outside showcases temporary public art installations along the lakefront and in public locations throughout Chicago neighborhoods.

EXPO VIDEO
EXPO VIDEO presents a focused selection of dynamic film, video, and new media works. Curated by Ali Subotnick, the works on view will be presented in two large-format screening rooms on the main floor of the exposition.

OVERRIDE
Running from August 28 to September 17 to align with the exposition, OVERRIDE | A Billboard Project is an unprecedented citywide public art initiative, featuring the work of 11 international artists on 29 sites throughout Chicago’s City Digital Network, presented in partnership with the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) and the City of Chicago.

EXPO Sound
The inaugural program of EXPO Sound, curated by daata editions, will feature new artworks by select international artists, installed throughout the public speaker system at Navy Pier, and on the /Dialogues Stage inside the exposition hall.

Curatorial Forum
Developed by EXPO CHICAGO and Independent Curators International (ICI), the Curatorial Forum offers a group of mid-career and established curators the opportunity to explore significant issues relating to curating, programming, institution-building and audience engagement. For the first time, the Curatorial Forum will feature a series of sessions focused on critical questions relevant to contemporary practice and context, led by internationally recognized leaders in the field.

Art Critics Forum
Hosting leading national and international critics, the second annual EXPO CHICAGO Art Critics Forum, entitled “Criticism in the Post-Truth Era,” will address the impact of the current political climate on the state of art journalism.

Palais de Tokyo: Singing Stones
September 13–October 29, 2017
Curated by the Palais de Tokyo’s Katell Jaffrès, brings together 11 emerging artists from both the French and Chicago art scenes, as part of their first off-site exhibition program with the the Institut français in the United States. Presented within The Roundhouse—a 17,000 sq. ft space built in 1881 and designed by Burnham & Root—at the DuSable Museum of African American History, the exhibition design will involve a strong architectural component through a partnership with the Graham Foundation and Guest Designer Andrew Schachman.

Chicago Architecture Biennial: Make New History
September 16, 2017–January 7, 2018
The 2017 edition of EXPO CHICAGO will align with the Chicago Architecture Biennial. Aligning for the first time with the exposition, the opening of the 2017 edition of the Chicago Architecture Biennial will feature the vision of the biennial’s Artistic Director’s Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee of Los Angeles based architecture firm Johnston MarkLee. EXPO ART WEEK
September 11–17, 2017
Presented in conjunction with Choose Chicago, the city’s tourism and marketing organization and Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, EXPO ART WEEK (September 11–17) joins with the city’s most prestigious cultural institutions, including museum exhibitions, gallery openings, public art installations, music, theater and dance performances, and special dining experiences. A highlight of the program, Art After Hours, citywide gallery openings will take place on Friday, September 15, from 6–9pm.
