Fifth award ceremony will take place in Ljubljana including book launch and conference in memory of Piotr Piotrowski.

The Russian curator and author Viktor Misiano, living in Moscow and Cisternino (Italy), will be honoured for his outstanding curatorial achievements, writings and editorial work. On December 9, 2016 at a ceremony in Ljubljana, Misiano will be awarded as one of the most important art professionals and cultural agents in Eastern Europe during the last 30 years. Grants will be given to Viviana Checchia, Anca Verona Mihuleţ and OFF-Biennale Budapest.

The Igor Zabel Award for Culture and Theory honours exceptional cultural achievements by art historians, curators, and theorists whose work is dedicated to deepening and broadening knowledge of visual art and culture in Central, Eastern, and South-Eastern Europe. Igor Zabel (1958–2005) was an influential Slovenian art historian and curator. He was actively involved throughout his life in several fields of theory and culture—as an author, essayist, modern and contemporary art curator, literary and art critic, translator, and mentor for new generations of curators and critics of contemporary art.

The laureates of this award, just like Igor Zabel himself, have brought together specific fields of knowledge and culture, and pointed to the necessity of their omnipresence in human lives. These are the very ideas that the Igor Zabel Award cherishes. An international jury made up of one artist, one curator, and one theorist appoints the laureate. In addition to the award three grants are also offered. The laureate gives one of these grants, while the jury decides the other two. With total prize money of EUR 76,000 it is one of the highest and most prestigious prizes for cultural activities related to Central, Eastern, and South-Eastern Europe.
