Curated by John Waters

FraenkelLAB is pleased to announce its first exhibition, Home Improvements, curated by John Waters. On view April 15 through May 28, this eclectic group exhibition will encompass works in a wide range of media by Martin Creed, Moyra Davey, Vincent Fecteau, Paul Gabrielli, gelitin, Paul Lee, Tony Matelli, Doug Padgett, Karin Sander, Gedi Sibony, Lily van der Stokker, and George Stoll.

John Waters describes the exhibition as “a celebration of the low-tech concept of ‘remodeling’. These 12 artists’ humble but surprisingly imperious paintings, sculptures, photographs and drawings will hopefully make any serious property owner want to throw caution to the wind, pack up their living space, and start over.”

Featured in Home Improvements are works that transform the mundane and pay tribute to quotidian domestic materials: shopping bags, a wall mirror, bath towels, staples, a stroller. Other works reveal unexpected aesthetic pleasure in overlooked fixtures of the home, such as a light switch, a floor mat, stereo equipment, a breaker box, toilet paper, and kitchen sponges.

About FraenkelLAB
FraenkelLAB, spearheaded by Fraenkel Gallery co-owners Frish Brandt and Jeffrey Fraenkel, is a flexible new venue for adventurous artwork in any medium. The wide-ranging works to be presented at FraenkelLAB may be from any era, and exhibitions often will include artists not currently represented by Fraenkel Gallery. The new space, located at 1632 Market Street, features 18-foot ceilings and a large glass façade that offers a striking presence on San Francisco’s main thoroughfare.
