Haein Art Project started in 2011 as a special project of the Tripitaka Koreana Festival which celebrates the thousandth anniversary of the Tripitaka Koreana. The making of the Tripitaka Koreana was carried out for sixteen years to once again implore divine assistance with combating the Mongol invasion during the Goryeo Dynasty. Thus it is regarded as a national project culturally, socially, economically that unified the country. Haein Art Project aims to share these beliefs behind the making of the Tripitaka Koreana, on non-violence and unification, and furthermore bridge different boundaries with creative communication and harmony.

The first Haein Art Project’s theme was ‘Tong,’ and took place in Haeinsa Temple grounds and Seongbo Museum. The first edition aimed to portray a new type of reconciliation that transcends the borders created by languages, ideas, race and nationalities. This year, in the second edition of the Haein Art Project, thirty groups that consist of local and international participating artists will present a variety of works that interpret the theme of ‘maum,’ a Korean word that holds the meaning of mind, heart, spirit, which branches out to consciousness and communication. If the first project was to celebrate and remember the thousand years of history of the Tripitaka Koreana, this second edition is to suggest a vision for the coming thousand years that we will be creating. Participating artists of the project have put together their works that deal with the theme ‘maum’ and have taken part in the process of discussion on the concerns of Haeinsa Temple; how to portray the religion and the role of the temple itself in approaching modern society and the public in a different method from a thousand years ago.

Especially in this year’s project, the exhibition area is expanded, where works will be installed not only in the Haeinsa Temple grounds and Seongbo Museum, but also in the Sorigil national park pathway which was made in 2011.

Haein Art Project is a contemporary art project which has an outlook towards life, reflections of Buddhism as a philosophy, and carries the cultural value of Haeinsa Temple’s perception, history and natural surroundings. The project will communicate and interact with those who visit the Haeinsa Temple, and show the contemporary thoughts that reach out further from the boundaries of religion, designed to have a long-term vision and develop into a sustainable and continuous yearly project.
