This fall, FLAX is partnering with Tin Flats to present a series of programs focusing on the notions of process and translation—exploring the transition space in which they develop and the actions they offer. FLAX’s residency puts the research process of the artists and curators at the center of its programs. The FLAX House hosts several artists per year and has become both a center for research and an artistic community. As a live-work space, the FLAX House echoes the hybridity of Tin Flats and its artists’ studios, shared workshop and exhibition space in the heart of Frogtown. Both places witness processes and creation.

All the programs oscillate between presence and absence, tangibility and invisibility, bringing together the works of artists from Los Angeles, France and beyond. The group exhibition The Angel’s Share uses a chemical phenomenon of disappearance as a metaphor. Endless Song performance duo is grounded by the shape of the space around the performers’ bodies, making the invisible tangible. The exhibition The Tyranny of Distance, presented simultaneously in Los Angeles and in Angers, France, navigates between two continents, with all the artists tackling the question of translation in time and space by presenting artworks in both places.

About Tin Flats
Tin Flats is an artist-run space founded on a desire to foster artistic practice, collaboration, dialogue, exhibition, and community. Located in a former chromium-plating factory by the LA River in the Frogtown neighborhood of Los Angeles, the 10,000-square-foot building houses the studios of five artists: Conor Fields, Andrea Marie Breiling, Chandler McWilliams, Stephen Neidich, and Isabel Yellin; a communal workshop; and an artist residency in partnership with The Underground Museum. Tin Flats is also home to a 1,500-square-foot exhibition space programmed by FLAX in the fall 2018. Tin Flats was founded in 2017 by Stephen Neidich.

The FLAX Projects are supported, in part, by the FLAX Creative Circle including The Skylark Foundation, Arthur W. Forney, Olga Garay English, John-Mark Horton, and Katharina and Thierry Leduc.

The FLAX Projects are also supported, in part, by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission.
