David Novros: Paintings 1966 / Sarah Crowner: Three Concrete Sculptures / Ken Price: Works on Paper 1967-1995

Kayne Griffin Corcoran is pleased to announce their March programming including exhibitions by David Novros and Ken Price in the Main and South gallery, and a project by Sarah Crowner in the Courtyard.

This will be the first exhibition of David Novros with the gallery and his first in Los Angeles in three decades. On view will be a selection of works conceived of in the 1960s—including paintings exhibited in his first solo shows at Dwan Gallery and Park Place Gallery (both 1966.) David Novros’ early works consist of a series of modular panels, often painted with Murano—a pigment that reflects and refracts light to create a color-shifting quality. Depending on the position of the viewer, the panels appear to change from white to shades of either pink, green, blue, or yellow. For the artist, this material effect engaged his interest in making work that revealed itself in relation to the viewers’ movements through time and space.

David Novros was born in 1941 in Los Angeles, CA and received a BFA from the University of Southern California in 1963. His work was first exhibited as part of a two-person exhibition with Mark di Suvero at Park Place Gallery in New York in 1965, followed by two subsequent solo shows at Dwan Gallery in Los Angeles and New York in 1966.

In the South Gallery, Ken Price’s third exhibition with the gallery will comprise of works on paper ranging from 1967-1995. Drawings preceded any other type of work for Price. “It’s where essential thinking goes on, and it’s the soul connection too,” he said. It allowed for flexibility in form and gave multiple avenues where a work could lead to, exist in, and be thought about. “I can look at different areas of imagery that never have to be resolved…I can play around with color…among other things, a good drawing can cut right to the essence of something.”

Ken Price (1935–2012) was born in Los Angeles and received a BFA from the University of Southern California before receiving an MFA from New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred in 1959. His first solo exhibition was at the influential Ferus Gallery in the 1960s.

For her project at Kayne Griffin Corcoran, Sarah Crowner presents three individually tinted concrete sculptures in-situ in the gallery’s courtyard and expanding on her vocabulary of forms, textures and colors. Her forms often take into consideration various perspective shifts and how the viewers engagement changes from a 2-d drawing and its translation into a 3-dimensional object.

Sarah Crowner (b. 1974, Philadelphia, PA) lives and works in New York. Recent projects include participation in the 57th edition of the Carnegie International (2018); scenography and costume design for Jessica Lang’s “Garden Blue” with the American Ballet Theater (2018); as well as the permanent site-specific installation at the Wright Restaurant at the Guggenheim Museum (2017.)
