International Print Center New York (IPCNY) presents the work of 30 artists as part of its New Prints Program, a biannual, juried open call for prints and print-based work created in the preceding 12 months. Titled Forms of Enclosure, this exhibition features works from the United States, Argentina, France, Poland, Canada, and Bulgaria.

While the artists in this exhibition are coming from different places and points in their careers, a common thread throughout the work is the shaping of space, both visually and metaphorically. These spaces range from Arel Lisette Peckler’s ghostly nooks, to Alicja Grobelka and Sean P. Morrissey’s architectural abstractions, to Enrique Leal’s biomorphic portals. Rashid Johnson, Kyung Eun You, and Kate Liebman all use grids to build their compositions, while Judith Linhares and Ulrike Müller both use lively forms to thwart structure. In capturing the ways that one can actively create or resist enclosure, this exhibition shapes a narrative around what it means in the current moment to hold personal, social, and political space. The three awardees of the New Prints Artist Development Program will be announced at the opening reception on January 17.

Artists: Lisa Anne Auerbach, Susan Belau, Jill Burks, Susan Goethel Campbell, Allison Conley, Gabriela Esterovich, Caroline Forest, Alice Gauthier, Alicja Grobelka, Gary Groves, Lucy Holtsnider, Anna Hutchings, Richard Hutter, Rashid Johnson, Alison Judd, Enrique Leal, Kate Liebman, Judith Linhares, Mallory, Taryn McMahon, Zoran Mishe, Sean P. Morrissey, Ulrike Müller, Gail D. Panske, Arel Lisette Peckler, Claudia Rofman, Janet Yagoda Shagam, Rob Swainston, Naho Taruishi, and Kyung Eun You.

About the New Prints Program

IPCNY’s New Prints Program is a platform for artists from the widest possible range of backgrounds working in the medium of print. The biannual open-call exhibitions feature prints in a variety of formats and techniques produced in the preceding twelve months. Artists selected for the exhibition are eligible to apply for the New Prints Artist Development Program. This program consists of three opportunities for artists to further develop their careers and printmaking practice: a month-long Artist Residency in partnership with EFA Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop; an Artist Mentorship, to provide the artist with critical feedback, career guidance, and introductions in the field; and Sponsored Coursework, which funds workshops or classes of the artist’s choice.

New Prints is supported in part by public funds from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, and by the Areté Foundation. Support for all programs and exhibitions at IPCNY is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, and by foundations including: Lily Auchincloss Foundation, Inc., the Milton & Sally Avery Arts Foundation, Inc., Deborah Loeb Brice Foundation, The Greenwich Collection Ltd., Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation, The Jockey Hollow Foundation, PECO Foundation, the Thompson Family Foundation, Travelers Foundation, New York Community Trust, and the Wege Foundation, along with major individual support.
