das weisse haus visual arts programme features five exhibitions as well as a number of events corresponding to the themes of the shows during the first half of the year. Showcasing local and international artists, das weisse haus presents exhibitions focusing on a wide variety of topics, such as artists publications, transculturality or avant-garde film. The exhibitions will be accompanied by transdisciplinary encounters between artists, curators, academics and other specialists. Camera Lucida

February 20–March 30, 2019
Opening: February 19, 7pm

Published in 1980, Camera Lucida is undeniably one of the most relevant books about the photographic medium. This essayistic exhibition with the same title showcases a series of artworks arranged in a specific temporal order. It is through this choreographed succession of works and their consequently impermanence on site that Roland Barthes’ book will be visually and poetically revisited.

Republished: Questioning Boundaries

Reproducing, re-examining, redefining as well as questioning, changing, setting up and interpreting content are the strategies that the exhibition Republished: Questioning Boundaries deals with. The show presents artists’ books that manipulate already published material and place it in a new context through a variety of interventions. Relating to a wide variety of topics, the showcased artists’ books are displayed together with other pieces inspired by them.

Parallax Trading
April 10–May 18, 2019 
Opening: April 9, 7pm

The group exhibition Parallax Trading presents artists based in Austria and Japan whose practices scrutinise the formation of cultural identity, invisible boundaries, and social frameworks such as nationality, race, gender. Using various mediums including video, photography, installation and performance, the artists explore the current social situations in the two countries by interweaving historical fragments.

Study for refraction and rotary motion, a site-specific intervention by Mario de Vega
April 10–May 18, 2019 
Opening: April 9, 7pm

Specifically designed for the circular exhibition area of das weisse haus, Study for refraction and rotary motion, is a sound installation by Mario de Vega that relates to the principle of Current Flow through electromechanical systems. This site-specific intervention is based on stereophonic diffusions of aural recordings archived during an antarctic pole expedition.

May 29–July 6, 2019 
Opening: May 28, 7pm

Canadian artist and filmmaker Joyce Wieland gained international recognition for her short films navigating the space between politically charged language and structural aesthetics. The exhibition highlights the diversity of Wieland’s practice through the lens of her use of language showcasing works from the 1960s and 70s: films, printed material and works on paper. The exhibition is conceived in dialogue with artist Elisabeth Kihlström.

Blanche by Nives Widauer
November 22, 2018–January 24, 2019
Opening: November 21, 2018, 7pm

Materiality and motion, language and image, space and time, these were the parameters used by Nives Widauer in her solo show. Through the story of a fictitious character named Blanche, Widauer examined in her choice of media her modus operandi being: intuitive precision.
