Issue three: “Welcome to Barbados”

Sugarcane Magazine today announces artist Sheena Rose as guest editor for the Barbados-themed third issue of the print edition

Sheena Rose, a contemporary multi-disciplinary artist, based in Barbados, will work with other artists, performers, writers such as Jason Fitzroy Jeffers and photographer Adrian Richards to create an in-depth exploration of Barbadian identity, culture, history, and gender. She envisions the magazine as a platform that allows the contributors to express themselves freely and share personal experiences that counter the tourist-destination narrative often dominated by stereotypes and clichés. 

Says Rose, “I want to show the depth of Barbados, show our truth. There is more to see than the beach and the sand. It may not always be a pretty image, but we have much more to say. I am honored to share my experiences, and I want people to read this magazine and discover more of the talent out there and get to know the depth of Barbados.”

With its third edition in print, Sugarcane Magazine presents a creative portrait of Barbados, its arts community and cultural heritage that takes readers beyond the beaches. Intended to offer readers an insider’s view of the island and its creative and cultural heritage, the publication also very intentionally pushes forward the contemporary art discourse in the Caribbean and includes the island in a larger conversation on contemporary art in the Americas.

“This issue wipes away the sand and talks about the people of Barbados and their lives as creatives,” says Sugarcane founder and Editor in Chief Melissa Hunter-Davis. “I appreciate Sheena’s point of view, and I wanted her to open up the island to me and those who admire her work.” Issue three is available for pre-order at sugarcanemag.com.

About Sheena Rose
Sheena Rose is a contemporary multi-disciplinary Caribbean artist who lives and works in Barbados. Rose is a Fullbright Scholar and holds a BFA Honors degree, Barbados Community College, 2008 as well an MFA from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, 2016. Rose’s work, including animations, drawings, paintings, performance art, and new media, has been shown across the globe, including the Havana Biennial, Venice Biennial, Gwangju Biennial, Jamaica Biennial, and at art institutions such as MoCADA, Queens Museum, Turner Contemporary Gallery and  Residency Gallery. She has been the recipient of a number of international artist residencies, and her work has also been included in a number of art fairs, film festivals and auctions such as  Prizm Art Fair, Third Horizon Film Festival and Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation Auction- Art for Life. Rose’s work is also featured on the cover of three books and in 2017, she was invited to perform her piece “Island and Monster” at the prestigious Royal Academy of Arts, London and also at MoCADA, New York. Rose has been featured in The New York Times, Travel & Leisure Magazine and Vogue Australia.
