Disobedience always finds ways to pierce control: The 23rd issue of AWC has been produced on the persistence of kindness and the imminence of destruction. It is determined by Jonathas de Andrade’s series “With the Heart Coming out of the Mouth”, the stitches of Nour Shantout, the drawings of Frédéric Bruly Bouabré, film stills by Hasan Özgür Top, Imani Jacqueline Brown and Samaneh Moafi, as well as the boldest banners ever made by Barbara Kruger. The artworks presented in the issue obstruct the categories proposed by a binary system that offers archaic forms of creation. Instead, they propose a form of care as the motor of a shitstorm.

What if flags would not represent nations, but communities of neighbors?
Kunsthalle Wien, Arts of the Working Class and wohnpartner present six new flags produced for selected Gemeindebauten in Vienna as part of the Weapons of Choice project. The flags display quotes from songs that were selected by residents of the Gemeindebauten in the context of an open call and deal with work, unemployment and workers’ rights.
The flags will be shown on the façades or roofs of the following Gemeindebauten in Vienna: Karl-Marx-Hof, Fischerstiege, Reumannhof, George-Washington-Hof, Metzleinstaler Hof and Gemeindebau Im Werd.

Between September 15 and 16, AWC will organize a Meeting Point in the frame of Berlin Questions, the annual conference on the urban development of the city of Berlin, this year taking place in the iconic venue of the ICC. The Meeting Point is a reading corner, where people can meet during the day and until the evening, parallel to the conversations that take place on the stage, a program called The New Unknown. The Meeting Point will have an Open Mic for impromptu readings and conversations during Thursday and Friday afternoon, unfolding into a night program with music performances and DJ sets.

Breaking the Loop of Ownership
AWC interventions at Atelier Gardens, formerly the Berlin Union Film Studios

Responding to the history of the building and the nature of the space, Arts of the Working Class joins the inauguration of TON 1, one of the oldest buildings of the former Berlin Union Film Studios, now active as an environmental and cultural activism hub called Atelier Gardens. AWC’s program will include projections of selected silent films by Urban Gad, Ernst Lubitsch, Georg Jacoby, Adolf Edgar Licho, a.o., and accompanied by the cello and voice of Franziska Aigner. Berlin Fassaden by Asta Gröting will cover one of the walls of Atelier Gardens, while in the former Casino canteen next to TON 1, empty speculative objects are displayed in flags produced with Lena Kocutar and Theresa Hoffmann and in dialogue with embroideries made by Nour Shantout and paintings by Paul Sochacki. The courtyard will activate a further episode of the food market conceived by AWC for Atelier Gardens, titled Souls for Foods, while the night will continue with a DJ set.
