Spacex is pleased to announce the appointment of Andrew Hunt as the organisation’s new director. Hunt joins from Focal Point Gallery in Southend-on-Sea, where he has been director since 2008. He will lead Spacex into its fifth decade of producing exhibitions and commissioning public programmes in Exeter from December 2013, and will succeed Nicola Hood, who has moved on to become curator at amino, a contemporary arts production company based in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Spacex chair Mark Waugh commented, “Since its inception in 1974, Spacex has earned a reputation as a leading venue for the presentation and discussion of contemporary art. Andrew Hunt has a track record of inspirational programming and has worked with a dynamic range of international artists, writers and curators. In addition to his curatorial vision, he brings considerable expertise in writing, publishing and organisational development. I am delighted that Andrew will be joining us and am certain that he will build on the success of our outgoing director Nicola Hood on bringing exceptional artists to the gallery and city of Exeter.”

Andrew Hunt
Andrew Hunt has been the director of Focal Point Gallery since 2008, during which time he has produced an internationally recognised exhibition programme. In September 2013, his development of Focal Point Gallery culminated in the organisation’s move into an ambitious new gallery, a capital project funded by Arts Council England that contains permanent commissions by artists including Mike Nelson and Allen Ruppersberg. He was previously curator at International Project Space, Birmingham (2005–8) and assistant curator at Norwich Gallery (2003–5). Over the last ten years, Hunt has organised numerous exhibitions and projects, including solo shows by Elizabeth Price, Eddie Peake, Dawn Mellor, Kitty Kraus, Marc Camille Chaimowicz, Kai Althoff, Anja Kirschner and David Panos, Anna Parkina, Tris Vonna-Michell, Sue and Terry Atkinson, Steven Claydon, and John Russell, as well as offsite projects by artists including Scott King, Mark Titchner, Morag Keil and Keith Farquhar. In 2012 he was a member of the Turner Prize jury. His writing has appeared in magazines and journals such as Art Monthly, Domus, DotDotDot, frieze, Mousse Magazine, TATE ETC. and Untitled.

Nicola Hood
Nicola Hood was director at Spacex from 2005, during which time she championed an ambitious, internationally recognised exhibition programme both within the gallery and at offsite locations. At Spacex, she curated over 40 exhibitions including the first solo shows and performances in the UK by Shaun Gladwell, Laura Kikauka, He Yun Chang and John Court, as well as exhibitions by Theo Jansen, Cory Arcangel, Paul Rooney, Dawn Mellor and Emily Wardill.
