Beijing Contemporary EXPO

Given the context of the ongoing industry development, we are devoted to introduce the latest achievements in artistic practices to a greater audience, renew their perceptions on the values of contemporary art and finally engage people in this historical leap for the development of contemporary Chinese culture.

With a focus on integrating the internal chronicles and the external communications concerning the values in contemporary Chinese art, the Beijing Contemporary EXPO, in collaboration with various art galleries, institutions, collectors, media and brands, aims to build an integrated platform that promotes the development of contemporary Chinese art. We are hoping to discover an organizational approach that connects local experiences in the current globalized context and stimulates the vital energy embedded in the industry in order to consolidate a broader social dimension.

Introduction
Taking the form of an exhibition as a point of departure, the Beijing Contemporary is committed to generate and promote the values of Chinese contemporary art. This art EXPO shares the same goals with its participating art galleries. They are our closest partners and members of this community, for whom we are devoted to provide a state of the art platform for exchange, display and communication, and together, we will build an artistic eco-system intimately linked to the various layers of our society. Furthermore, through this process, we would like to present this cultural subjectivity and system of values drawn from contemporary Chinese art to the cultural market and the general public. The Beijing Contemporary has thus established five units, namely, “Story,” “Value,” “Future,” “Energy” and “Wonder.”

Story: Painting, Mapping
As the generator of values for the Beijing Contemporary, the first edition of the “Story” unit takes on the theme Painting, Mapping. For this theme, Bao Dong, the curator of the exhibition, aims to present a “survey” on the perceptions of contemporaneity in Chinese painting by pointing out the essential issues of concern and the different paths of artistic practices in China. The scope of these issues spans from the ways in which art practices in China respond to external influence since the modernist era, the realist and the modernist traditions from Western art, as well as the ways in which contemporary Chinese artists conceive their own traditions, in subjects such as the literati painting tradition, folk arts, and the longstanding reciprocal interactions between these traditions. When confronted with these external and internal traditions, the issues that contemporary Chinese painting is facing include art and society, elites and the public, international and local reception, knowledge and the unknown and etc. In this sense, it is inevitable that contemporary Chinese painting is embroiled in the ideological and the experiential of contemporaneity.
